Cloth Diapering 101: A Quick Start Guide for Mums & Dads in Singapore :)

Thinking about cloth diapers, or maybe you're already diving in? Properly washing and caring for them is key to a happy baby bum and a smooth experience for all caregivers :)

It'll become a simple routine before you know it since your washing machine does most of the work!

First, let’s look at the types of diapers:

Types of Cloth Diapers: Finding Your Perfect Match

  1. All-in-One (AIO): Super convenient! It's all one piece – absorbent layers sewn right into a waterproof cover. Grab and go!

  2. All-in-Two (AI2): Two-part system. You have a waterproof cover (which can be reused between washes) and a removable insert that snaps in. Easy to customize absorbency!

  3. Pocket Diapers: Like AI2s, but you stuff the insert into a pocket cover which needs to be changed every time. Great for customizing and quick drying!

  4. Covers: Just the waterproof shell. You pair them with absorbent inserts, prefolds, or flats. Budget-friendly and versatile!

  5. Flats/Preflats/Prefolds: The classics! Flats are rectangular cloth diapers that you fold. Super absorbent and economical, but require a bit of folding.

  6. Fitted Diapers: Shaped like disposables, but made of absorbent material. Need a separate waterproof cover. Great for nights or heavy wetters!

Basic Terms: Decoding the Lingo

  • Insert/Soaker: The absorbent layer that goes inside the diaper to catch the pee!

  • Booster: An extra absorbent layer for those times when you need a little extra protection (hello, naps and nighttime!).

  • PUL (Polyurethane Laminate)/TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane): The magical waterproof material that keeps the wetness in!

Wash Routine Basics: Let Your Washing Machine Do The Work!

Okay, let's get down to washing. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A Quality Detergent: Baby detergents are usually too mild. You need something with enough surfactants and enzymes to get those diapers clean! Mainstream detergents work great in most cases, while plant-based or sensitive detergents will need higher wash temperatures to work effectively. We do recommend bcleanco the only plant based detergent to work consistently well even at 40 degrees :)

  • A Dry Pail: This is where you store the dirty diapers before washing. A simple, well-ventilated basket works great! Good airflow is key to prevent smells.

  • A Washing Machine: Top-load or front-load, both works! We do recommend front loaders for its energy and water savings, plus it heats up water which is crucial for clean laundry :)

And that's it! Your washing machine is your best friend in this cloth diapering journey. A good wash routine gives you peace of mind knowing those diapers are clean and comfy for your little one. Happy cloth diapering!
